We've all been there, absolutely desperate to get your hands on a beauty product only to get it and realise it doesn't work for you. I'm lucky in the sense that this is quite a rarity for me, but, even so, there are still items I own that I wish I hadn't had purchased...
Quick disclaimer: While these products haven't worked for me, I will probably still love their brand and it doesn't mean they won't work for you!
Too Faced - White Chocolate Bar Palette
I am kicking myself for putting this palette on this list because I love Too Faced as a brand (it's up there in my top 3) and I was completely in love with their White Chocolate palette when it came out. I have the Sweet Peach palette and it's my favourite palette that I own, so I was expecting great things from this. I just don't find any inspiration from the colour scheme and I find the shades too cool toned for me - I also find the shadows have a lot of fallout (pictured below) but aren't that pigmented. A plus side is that it smells absolutely AMAZING! I'm not going to get rid of this palette any time soon, though, because I've only had it about 6 weeks so I'm going to keep persevering because I reaaallly want to love it.
KYLIE COSMETICS - KKW COllection
I was dying for the KKW Collection when it first came out, to the point that I stayed up all night to get it on its first release. The packaging is adorable and I love the colours, but when they arrived I only really used two of them, so gave my cousin one (Kim) and kept the other three. Kimberly is absolutely my favourite. I like their formula but it doesn't have a great staying power and I find them to be quite streaky when they're being applied. Reapplying isn't a huge issue for me when I'm at college, but when I'm spending all day/night at work, I want something that stays down! I think I'd buy the colours I use again - which, sadly, isn't actually an option - but I regret buying the collection as a whole (especially with the expensive delivery).
Jeffree STar Cosmetics - Velour lIQUID Lipstick in Chrysanthemum
I got Chrysanthemum at the same time as Redrum (which I love). The formula is great and it's lovely and pigmented, I just don't think the colour suits my lips. I'm quite pale, and I think the colour makes me look a bit washed out - I know some people like pale nude lips with pale skin, this is just my personal opinion. I occasionally reach for Chrysanthemum for eye looks, but in reality it's just sitting on my lipstick stand.
Mac - Warm Neutrals Palette
The colour scheme for this palette is lovely, but really doesn't suit my eye colour (I find browns don't go that well with my eyes) and I don't think the eyeshadow quality is that good. I also find the shadows really difficult to blend. I was surprised by this because everyone raves about Mac eyeshadows, but I have much better palettes and literally never reach for this.
(I actually gave this palette to my best friend a few days before uploading this post)
Urban Decay - 'Self Adjusting' Face Primer
I don't know whether I can really put this primer in here as I don't look at it and think "god, I wish I hadn't bought you", but it's going in anyway. I find this primer works great on my cheeks and forehead, but dreadfully on oily areas like my nose and chin, it just doesn't seem to stay put or last very long. I used this in the winter and it used to stick to my drier patches, but I've now got those under control so this is no longer an issue. I don't feel the need to get rid of this primer, but I have had to buy a mini Benefit Porefessional to use on the areas that this Urban Decay one doesn't work with. I do really like it when it works, so it's a shame that I won't be getting it again.
Maybelline - Age Rewind Eye concealer in 'Light'
This concealer is great, but the shade range is practically non-existent. 'Light' is too dark for me unless it's summertime, and it creases on my eyelids if I want to use it for an eyeshadow primer. If they had a better shade for me, I'd definitely get it (the brightener is too pink).
Charlotte Tilbury - Legendary Brows in 'clear'
I bought this brow gel at the start of the year because it was £5 cheaper than the ABH one I usually use and I've been trying to save some money. I just hate the tiny applicator (which I couldn't see on the website), it means I have to keep dunking it in to get more product and it takes loads longer than I think applying brow gel should. I will most definitely be going back to my trusty clear ABH gel once I've used this up.
I think that's everything! I know I say I regret buying these products, but if I don't like something I will usually sell it (unless it's unsanitary) so there will probably be a reason that they're still in my makeup collection! As well, like I said, I will probably love the brands and it doesn't mean these products won't work for you.
I think I have a pretty big (and definitely expensive!!) makeup collection, and I'm always wanting to add to it by trying out new products. I may want to try out new beauty items, but there will always be certain products that I will buy time and time again. Here are my current makeup holy grails...
Too Faced - Better Than sEX mASCARA
I'm currently on my second tube of Too Faced's award-winning mascara, and I have a mini version on standby. Honestly, there's a reason Better Than Sex is labelled the world's best mascara. It does literally everything I look for in a mascara (and I'm very fussy) - it is volumising, lengthening and the wand is easy to use, as well as having adorable packaging. It doesn't clump but I do find there's a bit of excess mascara on my lids after I've applied it, but that's because it makes my lashes so long! I absolutely love Better Than Sex and I'd go as far as saying it is my favourite makeup product that I own.
(I'm sorry my tube looks a mess, it's almost run out so has been well loved!)
Anastasia Beverly Hills - Modern Renaissance Palette
£43, Beauty Bay
ABH's Modern Renaissance quickly made itself a cult product and I think any eyeshadow collection is incomplete without it. The colour scheme is beautiful and the shadows are insanely pigmented and blendable. I always get the best compliments on my eye makeup when I use this palette.
Spectrum Collections - The Glam Clam
£60, Spectrum Site
I absolutely swear by Spectrum Collection brushes, but their Glam Clam is my favourite because of how pretty it is. The brushes come in an adorable case and they are STUNNING. They're an amazing quality and I've had them over a year now with no signs of wear (they are slightly stained, but that's expected). Spectrum brushes are 100% vegan, too!
Fenty Beauty - Glossbomb lipgloss
£16, Harvey Nichols
I'm not sponsored by Fenty, I promise. The Fenty gloss is honestly just something else. The applicator is great, the gloss makes my lips look luscious and wearing it gives me the biggest confidence boost. It's fairly long lasting, but you will need to top up throughout the day. It's great value for money and smells amazing, too!
Kylie Cosmetics - KOKO K
$17 (£13 at time of writing this post, but I don't know the brand's rates), Kylie Cosmetics
I just adore the colour of Koko K and how well it suits my skin tone (it's my all time favourite nude), I'm currently on my second tube and I'm planning on restocking when I can. The formula of Kylie Cosmetics liquid lipsticks is quite drying, but I don't seem to have issues if I pop some Vaseline on before application. It. Does. Not. Budge. I can have it on absolutely all day without needing to touch up and I absolutely adore its scent! The downside is the shipping/taxes etc that everyone in the UK/international struggles with with Kylie's brand, but I'm heading to New York in the Summer so I'm hoping my tube can hold out until then. Also, Kylie's lipsticks are cruelty free! Which is something I found out while researching for this post.
Well, there's my holy grail makeup items! I know they're all fairly "high end", but if I love something then I'm happy to spend the money on it. What are your favourite beauty bits? Drop a comment below to let me know and maybe give me some advice on what else you'd like to see from me!
